Hand Speargun Maintenance: Keep Your Gear in Top Shape

After Every Dive

Salt water is the enemy of your gear. After every session, give your speargun a thorough freshwater rinse. Pay extra attention to the band attachment points, the spear shaft, and any metal components.

1. Rinse the entire gun with fresh water for at least 30 seconds.
2. Remove the spear shaft and rinse separately.
3. Dry with a towel and leave to air dry in the shade.
4. Never leave your speargun in direct sunlight — UV degrades rubber bands quickly.

Monthly Checks

• Rubber bands: Check for cracks, discolouration, or loss of elasticity. Replace every 6-12 months depending on use.
• Spear tip: Should be sharp enough to pierce fish scales easily. Use a fine file to sharpen.
• Shaft: Check for bends or corrosion. A bent shaft won't fly straight.

Storage

Store your speargun horizontally in a cool, dry place. Release tension on the rubber bands during storage — keeping them stretched will shorten their lifespan. A padded speargun bag is ideal for both storage and transport.
